How I Helped Build A Multi-Million Dollar Company From Scratch

Work-Life integration has steered me in a direction where both work and life co-exist, I continue to work on finding and maintaining an equilibrium.

I’ve discovered that this is an ongoing process.

So here I am, wanting to share with you one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned as a beauty pro who was searching for success, fulfillment and happiness in my career.

Recently, I was invited to be a guest speaker at the Zarb School Of Business at Hofstra University. Upon reflecting on my years as a salon and haircare brand partner, it feels timely to share one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned which include the twists and turns, disappointments and triumphs along the way. But at the end, it all came down to fierce intention. I was on a mission to make conscious choices that would lead to success in my career as a partner. It was all about ‘I will’ rather than “I won’t.’

LET ME EXPLAIN…

Almost 20 years ago, I didn’t fully understand the monumental effort required to launch a brand and grow a salon, especially in a category that barely existed back in 1999. Our team of 6 needed help building our brand from the ground up but we just didn’t have the money to fund this initiative. We quickly realized that we were going to have to combine our collective skill-sets, identify our talents and abilities beyond foundational cosmetology training and set it all in motion with fierce intention. We needed to embrace the learning curve ahead of us while aligning our vision and goals.

In addition to working long hours and growing our expanding salon and team from one to three locations, we traveled around the country showcasing our products and techniques at trade shows, panel discussions and distributor sales meetings. This was a huge commitment for many of us but as interest in the product continued to grow. we’d need to spend most of our weekends away from home, especially during show season.

We knew we had a winner. But, we quickly discovered that scaling a unique brand such as DevaCurl would take time, especially since our products and approach required shifting the mindsets and behaviors of beauty pros and their clients. 

⭐️For the next 15 years we continued to build credibility and awareness.

⭐️We taught beauty pros and their clients how to embrace their natural texture (and themselves), from the inside out with a proven step-by-step routine.

⭐️In 2001 we launched our hero product

⭐️ In 2004 we reached our first milestone -1 million in revenue.

⭐️20 years later, Henkel, a leading global powerhouse took interest in our brand and in 2019 they acquired DevaCurl. 

As for me, I knew that it was time for my next adventure with the launch of House of Harbinger. I knew what “enough” felt like and I was grateful to have it. I found the sweet balance between ambition and contentment and let me tell you, it's a great place to be. The invitation to partner with the founders back in 1996 and birth a brand and movement has been rewarding beyond my expectations.

Together we transformed this industry and undoubtedly shifted the mindsets, behaviors and attitudes of clients with natural texture around the world.

I never thought that it would take 20 years to realize our dream.
