Is Your Business Indispensable?
Greeting from Florida!
July kicked off with a bang!and while I’m not a fan of fireworks due to my dog’s noise anxiety, I do appreciate the celebratory spirit of acknowledging our independence. In the midst of enjoying myself, I've dedicated significant effort to effectively managing our esteemed group of educators in preparation for the upcoming Fall courses. They will soon be ready to share the Deva love with you! As we continue to grow, we will seek out more educators who are interested in sharing their passion and curl expertise with fellow beauty pros. Whether you're a long-time DevaCurl enthusiast or new to this community, I promise our new curriculum will amaze you! We've discovered the magic bullet that will empower curl specialists to cut with confidence, accuracy, and creativity, no matter the texture! So watch out, curly world—we’re back! New course offerings will hit the website soon! This project has been especially rewarding because leadership has given me the freedom to refine and revamp the curriculum to meet the needs of today's curl specialists, helping them grow their businesses while finding joy and creating meaningful connections with their clients. I’ve been fortunate to work with an incredible team of graphic designers who have brought new concepts and techniques to life with pristine visual presentations. We’ve created beautiful, easy-to-understand guidebooks to support curl specialists during and after their training. During my journey in this industry, what has continuously driven me is the desire to ignite a sense of self-assurance, strength, and motivation among fellow beauty professionals. Watching individuals achieve their utmost capabilities and prosper brings immense joy to my heart, similar ti the joy I experience in my own moments of success.
After all, when you love what you do and excel at it, you become indispensable - the topic of this month's featured article. Read on to uncover more about how embracing these principles can elevate your personal and professional endeavors.
In the realm of curl specialty, being indispensable to your clients goes beyond simply excelling at what you do—it's about becoming their go-to resource, the first name that comes to mind when your clients need something done. Think of it like your favorite coffee shop or your most comfortable pair of jeans—you can't imagine going anywhere else for the same experience, and that is how your clients should feel when they think about you. Last weekend, I had dinner with a client I first worked with over twenty years ago. She was referred to me after an unsatisfactory highlight job elsewhere, and I was able to fix it. She remained my client until I moved to Florida, but we kept in touch because of the meaningful connection we developed over the years. Recently, after another disappointing hair service, she instinctively reached out to me for guidance. Since I no longer live in New York, I found a trusted colleague to meet her needs. She’s now blissfully happy again and has even recommended some of her Florida curl friends to me. How cool is that?
So, how do you reach that level?

how gardening can inspire and ground you
Do you ever find yourself needing a little extra spark or inspiration at work? Throughout my life, I've explored various creative outlets. Since moving to Florida and trading a terrace and concrete skyline for a house with a lawn, I've discovered that when I need inspiration or a way to use my hands creatively, I turn to gardening. Sculpting shrubs is much like fine-tuning a curly cut, and a trip to the local nursery for beautiful flowers adds a pop of color to the landscape, much like how color accents a beautiful hairstyle. In those moments, my garden becomes a canvas for creativity and a sanctuary for my soul. The physical connection to the earth and the rhythm of gardening provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. And, while gardening offers a wonderful outlet for creativity, there are various art forms to enrich your craft even further.
Interestingly enough, I’ve also discovered an additional benefit through gardening that might help you with your business. Read below for my hot business tip!
To keep my brain in strategy mode, I recently discovered the art of companion planting. By carefully selecting and arranging plants that benefit each other, you not only create a thriving garden but also engage in a creative process that requires planning, observation, and adaptation. Watching how different plants interact and support each other can inspire new ideas and solutions, just as collaboration and support can strengthen the workplace relationship. At work, this approach can help you grow your business, foster collaboration and increase versatility at the workplace.
Switch out your cutting shears for gardening shears. Put away your color wheel and highlighting tools and go buy some beautiful flowers to plant. Get your hands dirty and watch your creativity bloom!
