If you haven’t heard the recent news, I am thrilled to share that I’ve signed back on with DevaCurl! I’ve been working behind the scenes since December, and I’ve already begun the process of spearheading the development of a new education initiative. As a founding salon member & academy co-founder for more than 25 years, I had always hoped my skills and expertise would be needed again at the right moment in time. To share a brief history of my departure, in 2019, when Henkel acquired our company, they had different plans for education. I too felt it was time for a shift both in my career and life. Sometimes, you can just sense when the time is right for a change. I relocated to Florida, initially to escape the impact of COVID-19 and to care for my parents. But I was pleasantly surprised to find myself falling in love with this new environment. It feels like a perpetual vacation, a stark contrast to my 30 years of urban living in NYC, which I adored. Since then, I've established The House of Harbinger education platform, and I will continue providing private coaching and technical training. Our self-paced online course for beauty professionals remains accessible to salon owners and stylists who are looking to elevate their businesses beyond technical skills. The first task in my new role is to upgrade the curriculum and develop a team of passionate and skilled educators who wish to share their Deva love and spark excitement in our curl community!

MASTERING THE FUSION: Where Technical expertise meets Creative Artistry
Over the years it’s become evident that finding that magical synergy between technical proficiency and creative artistry is crucial to what we do because as artists, we understand the necessity of expressing both modalities in our craft.
Here’s a question to consider,
“Have you ever wondered why sometimes you land a cut while others fall short?”
Whenever I am teach a cutting program, I often ask participants if they’ve ever found themselves in this predicament—a vulnerability I openly acknowledge by raising my own hand. The consensus among participants reaffirms a truth I've long recognized: to establish shapes (no matter the texture) we must continually explore new methods to create a solid foundation while drawing upon our intuitive eye for detail and fine-tuning. Over the years we discovered that intuition, while invaluable, can only take us so far without a roadmap. Lack of direction leads to challenges and, ultimately, compromises the outcome of our work. And, for stylists with fully booked schedules, the margin for error is slim, so the thought of rescheduling and adjusting a prior cut is daunting.
Reflecting on the original "curl by curl" cutting method, which emphasized intuitive expression, we realized that while some thrived, others struggled to grasp its organic nature. This revelation prompted a shift towards prioritizing structured foundations in our curriculum before nurturing creativity. We were thrilled to see that shifting our focus was embraced by so many beauty pros, and I'm elated to have the chance to reintroduce this concept into our curriculum in the coming months. It also reaffirms my belief that now, more than ever, the moment is ripe for us to delve deeper into refining our techniques.
