Are You Ready To Take The Entrepreneurial Plunge?
Hey Beauty Pro,
Being an entrepreneur is really hard.
Your days and nights are consumed with your business and the likelihood of failure is statistically high.
Am I suggesting you shouldn’t go for it?
Of course not!
But know this before you take the plunge:
20% of small businesses fail in their first year, which is typically the result of inadequate planning, overwhelm, hiring the wrong people and an inability to see where the challenges are and knowing how to correct them.
80% of salons will fail within the first 18 months of opening and almost 50% fail before reaching their 6th year in business. Yikes!
I started my hair career as a stylist working in someone else’s salon. It definitely had its perks, but when it came to influencing the salon vision, processes and leadership path, the owners had a different plan- which left me feeling otherwise. During my employment there, I realized that a salon is not the simplest business to run. I learned so much about what works and what doesn’t and that there are plenty of things you need to pay attention to. Even when the owners thought they had all the ingredients in place to run a successful business, many things went wrong. Needless to say they failed within 24 months of opening.
Following my employment, I was lucky enough to align with a group of like-minded beauty pros and we decided to take the entrepreneurial plunge together. This decision to start our own company meant we had to learn the skills that are critical to creating and maintain a remarkable salon business. If we were going to run it as we saw fit, we knew we’d need to roll up our sleeves and do the work.
There is simply no other way to achieve entrepreneurial success.
Successful pros in our community have one thing in common, a clear vision along with an action plan mapping out milestones, which is the only way to reach long-term goals and celebrate the small wins that happen along the way. I wish it were easier, but this is what it takes to beat the odds. There are many successful career coaches, marketing leaders and bloggers who will write about the secrets to business success and tell you what you need to do in order to achieve success. Yet, very few have actually done it themselves, especially in the beauty industry.
Here are 4 questions to ask yourself before taking the entrepreneurial plunge:
✅ Are you comfortable with sifting through chaos and creating processes that generate value?
✅ Are you highly experienced in the field you wish to start a business?
✅ Have you jumped around from job to job and think this is the only path to profit?
✅ Do you have financial stability?
Taking the entrepreneurial plunge requires a serious amount of focus and dedication and can feel like a seemingly never-ending uphill battle, so it’s important that you are honest with yourself.
Are you capable of this type of commitment, dedication and discipline needed to get you through even the most difficult moments?
Do you understand that being an entrepreneur requires building a business strategy with the understanding that success won’t happen overnight?
Some pros are able to achieve this type of success independently while others get stuck and need guidance and direction from those who have been there.
