IT’S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE

… or is it?

It’s so important to understand the interwoven relationship between a client and their hair because getting a haircut that isn’t aligned with their expectations can be disappointing and frustrating.

When I recently asked new clients why they hadn’t returned to a particular stylist, and chose to visit with me, most of them offered up these similar responses:

3 Common Mistakes

HAIr CUT TOO SHORT

HAIR WAS CUT WET

THEY JUST DIDN’T LISTEN

Define hair goals in advance so that you can offer a customized service recommendation that will deliver a heightened client experience. Make sure you provide services that speak to each of your client’s own unique needs while considering solutions to these previous challenges.

CHALLENGE: Hair cut too short

SOLUTION: Guide each client to understand the difference between cutting for a new look or preserving an existing shape and length with just a trim or a “dusting” to maintain the current shape.

CHALLENGE: : Hair was cut wet

SOLUTION: Hair shrinks. It’s not only clients with curls that deal with shrinkage, Most hair shortens as it dries. So hit pause for a second and consider cutting the hair while dry. It can also help prevent you from cutting it too short Remember, less is more with a client who has already had a negative experience. The one-inch trim you thought you cut might look a bit different once their hair is totally dry.

CHALLENGE: They just didn’t listen

SOLUTION: Engage in a thorough conversation during the consultation. Your approach should always combine technical and visually artistic techniques tailored to the needs of every curly client. Commit to listening and supporting when deciding whether to cut for a new look, or simply trim the hair. As stylists, we need to remember that each client has specific desires, concerns, challenges and past experiences that will inform how we customize their unique look and keep them coming back.
