Prep Your Client for A Great Cutting Experience

Prep Your Client for A Great Cutting Experience

Hey Beauty Pro,

Whether you’ve recently been trained to cut natural textures or you’ve been at it for quite some time, you already know that it’s not uncommon to see tears of joy after getting one of your cuts. And ,you must already know that the experience can be life-changing for each client that is lucky enough to find your talented hands and open heart.. The customized shape that you are able to create for your client is based on training and your understanding of their unique one-of-a-kind curls. But before all of that magic happens, it’s important to prepare them before heading to your salon. That’s why I’ve put together this quick preparation guide for anyone who is new to the world of texture or simply needs a refresh.

TO GET THEM READY FOR THEIR APPOINTMENT:

Tip #1: Leave Their Hair Alone

Since their hair will be cut while it’s dry and in its natural state, remind them to arrive at the salon with curls detangled and un-styled (no twist-outs or any other manipulation). Hair should hang loosely—accessories like ponytail holders can disrupt the curl pattern. If they are currently using products with sulfates, silicones or heavy oils, tell them to avoid these products for one to two weeks before their booking. Ditching those ingredients will make their hair softer and more defined, which will allow you to see their true curl type. You might even recommend a build-up removal service in advance of the cut.

Tip #2: Keep Expectations In Check
Bringing in a few #hairgoals pics to show you is a great idea, but clients should be encouraged to choose images of curly hair that match their own texture. A look on a similar curl type is much more likely to be achievable.

Tip #3: Prepare Them To Open Up
Let them know that sharing as much as they can during the consultation will assist you in your quest to reach a mutually shared vision.. it’s so important for them to talk candidly about their hair journey. Remind them that the more they tell you about their hair history—the highlights, the challenges and their approach to daily maintenance—the better you’ll be able to create a cut and a routine they will love.

Tip #4: Make A List Of Questions
They may already have mental notes about everything they want to go over with you, but once they plop down in your chair, it’s easy to forget all of the talking points. To prevent brain fog, remind them to jot down their most pressing issues. Product application? Biggest gripe about their hair? Do they struggle with moisture or a particular part of their regimen?

Conversation is the key to connecting with your client and learning how to guide them to love their curls. With a little bit of prep, they will get exactly what they want out of their appointment. Whether you’re a stylist, colorist, salon owner or hair care company, I’m excited to help you achieve an organized, inspired and engaging experience for the modern salon client. If you are ready to create a business and life that you love, then being here is worth your time and investment. I invite you to participate, learn, elevate your expertise and then back it up with meaningful actions.
