When I was a parter at the Devachan Salons in SOHO, NYC, we fully understood how important it was to build and maintain a strong business muscle. We were fully aware of what we needed to do in order to reach our goals. It was clear to us that we would need a second layer of stability within our team in order to reach our big picture goal of expansion. Our plan was to cultivate up-and-coming talent long before we needed them so that we’d be ready to pounce on new opportunities.
Building a strong muscle is bigger than simply learning a new technical skill which is why so many pros are stuck working long hours, and dreaming rather than bringing their vision to life. The missing piece has always been developing the other skills you need to build a strong core which includes strengthening your brand DNA, workplace culture, and client influencing skills.
Here’s how we strengthened our core business muscle in order to strengthen our team and move towards our big picture goal:
1️⃣ We identified what success looked like for us and the order in which we needed to work through our goals as a team. Our big goal was to expand without sacrificing the quality of our services or the client experience along the way. Our smaller goal was to strengthen our individual skill sets by focusing on areas that needed improvement.
2️⃣ ACTION-PLAN
We put together an action plan with a clear timeline for success and detailed milestones we would need to hit along the way. We knew we could move the needle forward with our current strengths while we continued to improve. It wasn’t always easy. We encouraged our team to explore new ways to vary their style and elevate their expertise depending on the opportunity or challenges they faced.
3️⃣ TOOLS
We identified which key areas were essential to growing the business and worth investing in. Then we would put everything we learned into play with strategic steps to follow.
4️⃣ ACTION
Everyone knew they would need to remain focused and disciplined. We spent countless hours strengthening our collective skills which the key to building the business muscle.
With a unified mindset surrounding our mission along with a fresh set of new tools and practices, we were able to add a second layer of team stability and put our expansion plan into action. We supported our team members to untangle problems on their own and come to us only if they were stuck because they needed to problem solve independently and feel confident that they were contributing meaningfully to a strong business muscle.
